A History of Lucasville Ohio: A Digital Gallery

Scioto County Floods

Even though Lucasville is located ten miles away from the Ohio River it is located along the banks of the Scioto River. Thus, Lucasville was heavily affected by the several major floods that occurred in Scioto county between 1847 and 1997. In a few of these floods, particularly the 1884 and 1917 floods, the water reached the second floor of buildings located in downtown Portsmouth. The images in this collection depict the impacts of the 1913, 1933, and 1935 floods in Lucasville and Portsmouth.

One particular flood in 1933 cut off access between Lucasville and Portsmouth. The bridges that crossed the Scioto River were covered with water. Local vendors could not take their wares to the city to sell until the flood waters receded.
