"Nursery Rhyme Suite"

Nursery Rhyme Suite including “Mistress Mary,” “Simple Simon,” and “Ride a Cock Horse.” These are still fairly commonplace nursery rhymes but we may know them simply as poems without music or to different music. They were linked musically by Jessica Raposo (above) for the choir to sing but were originally found as individual songs in the National Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs book (London: George Routledge, 1870)—interesting to think of nursery rhymes being “national” although many of them do refer to distinctly British places (like riding a cockhorse to Banbury Cross), etc. I excerpt one of the original scores, to “Mistress Mary” to show the intricate detail of the illustrations engraved by the famous engravers of the era, the Dalziel Brothers.
