Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Rounds, and songs about the seasons, were staples in children's songbooks of the era, so our choir tackled this one, "The Spring is come, / I hear the birds sing from bush to bush;/ Hark! Hark!/ I hear them sing;/ The linnet and the little wren,/ the blackbird and the thrush." The melody was written by a "Dr. Hayes," although the melodies created by the round were a bit tricky! It was found in One Hundred and One Best Songs (Chicago, n.d.) It is a typical spring song, though, that would be parodied by Gilbert and Sullivan for their "The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring," also recorded by the choir for this website.
