Colorado Fuel and Iron: Culture and Industry in Southern Colorado

Employee Life

Employees of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company didn't always leave the company behind when they clocked out at the end of the day. Many of them lived in company houses, shopped at company stores, picked their children up from company schools, worshiped in company churches, and recuperated in company hospitals. In their free time they played baseball for company teams, fished in company lakes, and drank in company saloons. This chapter explores the lives of CF&I families, and shows us just how deep the company was able to insert itself into the everyday activities of its employees.
