"Twinkle, twinkle, little bat"
"Twinkle, twinkle little bat," based on Alice in Wonderland, Victorians may be associated with prudery but they most certainly had a sense of humor as well, seen in the various parodies written during the era. This one, "Twinkle, twinkle little bat," is parodying Ann & Jane Taylor's "Twinkle, twinkle little star," also recorded for this website. It was written by Lewis Carroll for his 1865 Alice in Wonderland, as he humorously reflects on something, perhaps less appealing, found in the sky: "Up above the world you fly/ Like a teatry in the sky"! Various poems in the novel were set to music by a Mr. William Boyd in 1870, for The Songs from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" written by Lewis Carroll. He writes that the composing was "to me a source of real delight" (preface). I believe our youthful singers found the same to be true in learning this song for our recording!'
