"The hummingbird"
"The Hummingbird" (Eddy #75)—words anonymous, music by T. F. Seward. This song is an ode to the hummingbird, “so fairy-like and bright” (v. 1) describing how “crimson is her shining breast,/ Like to the red, red rose” (v. 2) and acknowledging its place in the ecosystem: “Thy food the honey from the flow’r, Thy drink the dew from heav’n” (v. 3). Our choir loved sing this song, probably for its sprightly tune in 6/8 which mimics the flight of the fast-winged hummingbird.
