Race and the Digital: Racial Formation and 21st Century Technologies

Methodology

‚ÄčThe Methods:This paper is based on my evaluation of the social media platform Pinterest, which was founded in 2008 and is currently managed by Cold Brew Labs (Business Insider) and two data sets coming from the Pew Research Center and Pew Hispanic Center. The data set from the Pew Research Center looks at the Percentage of Internet Users who Use Pinterest and comes from a larger study that looks at The Demographics of Social Media Users. The results were based on survey data from landline and cellphone interviews conducted in English and Spanish by Princeton Survey Research Associates International from November 14 to December 9, 2012 (Pew Research Center, 2013:12). The data set from the Pew Hispanic Center looks at Technology Use by Race and Ethnicity (2010) and comes from a larger study that looks at Latinos and Digital Technology. The results were based on data collected through landline and cellphone interviews in English and Spanish by Social Science Research Solutions from August 17 to September 19, 2010 (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010: 29). The aim of both data sets is to provide general patterns on digital technology use, access, and participation among various demographic groups, which will be useful in my analysis on how race disparities challenges the assumption that ICT use and participation is equally accessible to all. I will look to draw upon and extend the concepts of digital divide, participation gap, culture, and content creation as mentioned by various academic scholars.
