Mapping Indigenous Poetry of North America, 1830-1924

C. H. Campbell

Not much is known about the poet attributed to these lines. The poem was found in the August 1st 1855 issue of The Wreath of Cherokee Rose Buds, the student newspaper of the Cherokee Female Seminary in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The poem was introduced with the following context:

"A poem by Mr. C.H. Campbell, with which we would be very glad to please our readers, but it is not in our possession. However, we have taken the liberty to purloin a few lines from a copy that we have seen, and as we have so frankly acknowledged our misdemeanor, we hope the gentleman will pardon us."
