In the beginning the chronicle of Company 1998 reads like the log of a roving band of gypsies. It took some time for them to get settled and secure their niche in history.

The Company was organized as Co. 1934 on May 21, 1933, at Fort Monroe, Virginia. At that time the officer personnel consisted of a First Lieutenant and four regular enlisted men; the latter held the four key positions. There were twenty-one members assigned who with the officers were sent to Camp Desert Range, Utah, where they arrived in June. The Company was increased by June 30 to one hundred.

The next move took them on June 4 to Camp Wahwah Springs, Utah, and by July 31, the Company numbered 200 members. The stay here was short lived for on August 1, they moved back to Desert Range.

On October 21 there was placed in the Company 121 members, all of whom were from Montana. The Roving spirit again cast its shadow and on October 27, the Company moved to Lone Pine, California. After spending a winter under sunny southern skies the Montana member were returned to Montana never again to go south. Their first stop in Montana was on May 1, 1934, at Belton, Camp Fish Creek G. N. P. No. 3 in Glacier National Park. Then as winter approached, they moved into the Banana belt at Nine Mile on October 21, 1934. A side camp was placed at Moise to assist with the game preserve.

By this time the Company was composed of all Ninth Corps members so on May 1, 1935, the number was changed to Ninth Corps number of 1998. On May 7, 1935, an advanced cadre of twenty-five members were sent to Thompson River to establish a Camp. A site three miles further up stream was selected where some work was started, but it was decided to drop down stream to the present site. The entire Company arrived May 18, 1935, where it has remained ever since.
