Company 956 was organized at Fort Missoula on May 3, 1933. Under Captain Sutherland and Sergeant Blaschell of the regular army 25 enrollees left the next day for Coram Ranger Station where they establish their first camp.

In November of 1933 the company moved to St. Regis, Montana, where it was engaged in bridge building, road building and telephone line construction. As 1933 drew to a close the company was honored with the title “Best Camp in the Missoula District” and “Second Best in the Ninth Corps Area.”

October 31, 1934, saw the company embark for Feather Falls, California.

In the following spring the company returned and was assigned to Camp F-9, Haugan, Montana, at which site the company has since been located. Nursery work in summer and road construction, bridge building and telephone line construction are chief winter projects.

During the first three years of its existence, Company 956 had frequent turnovers of its commanding officers. On March __, 1936, however Captain John U. Schiess was assigned as commanding officer and has remained with the company since. Under his farseeing and energetic leadership the camp made rapid strides forward. Camp buildings were painted and the camp area landscaped. A camp gymnasium was built and a hydro-electric system installed. The morale and efficiency of the company were raised so that today Company 956 is one of the finest in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

The company’s educational department has kept pace with the rapid progress of the organization. Mr. Prahinski, CEA, has developed a well-balance program and is exceptionally proud of its results. During the last three year it has graduated 48 enrollees from high school and 19 from grade school. The MOUNTAIN CHIEFTAIN published by the Journalism class has been acknowledged by HAPPY DAYS as one of the finest mimeographed CCC papers in the United States.

In addition to the company-owned gymnasium the company has an athletic field bordering the camp area and has full equipment for all major and most minor sports. The athletic teams of the company have excelled in competition, especially in basketball in which sport the company has been undefeated in CCC competition for the last two year and at present are title holders of the Missoula District. Two members of the company’s boxing team hold titles emblematic of champions in their respective divisions for all CCC Camps in the Pacific Northwest.
