Company 280, was organized at Camp Dix, N. J., in early May, 1933, and the first camp was with the USFS, at Smith’s Ferry, Idaho. In October, 1933, the Company moved South to Black Late, Creston, Louisiana, where the boys were engaged in the construction of a large dam and a bridge in the state park. In July, 1934 Company 280 moved to Slidell, Louisiana, some thirty-five miles north of New Orleans and there worked on the restoration of Fort Pike, once used in the defense of New Orleans in the War of 1812. In October the company moved to Minden, to work on soil conservation. While here, the company was chosen first among SES companies in the 4th Corps. The next moves of the company followed in quick succession. July,1935 brought California with Camp Croker, Camp Feather Falls, Camp Virgilia, Camp Gansner Bar. In these camps the company worked under USFS, building roads, telephone lines, ranger stations, two parks, and dire fighting. During one of the fires the life of an old miner was saved by the boys in the village of Quincy. While at Gansner Bar the floods isolated the camp for seven days. In April, 1938, 280 arrived in Montana to work on the Piskun reservoir and the Sun River Canal. BR-33 was a tent camp and at the end of the summer the Company move to BR-80 on the Sun River, Just 4 miles north of Augusta. Here the Company is engaged in canal maintenance and work on the Willow Creek canal project. Jack Gati, member, is Featherweight Champion of Missoula District. In 1938 the Company was runner up for the district Baseball Championship. The company has an archery club affiliated with the nation archery association and Earl Kercheval, leader, won first place in class “C” at the First Montana Archery Tournament.
