Company 953 was organized October 5, 1939, and arrived in Camp Winifred on October 9 with 40 members transferred from the other Montana companies in the District. From this group, the overhead of the company was selected. On October 15, the Company was augmented by 156 rookies from the October enrollment.

On March 18, 1940, Camp Winifred had a disastrous fire, destroying three barracks and one bath house. It was only with the best efforts of the entire Company that the rest of the camp was saved.

Company 953 had a good basketball team during the past winter, winning 3rd in the sub-district tournament. Baseball is in full swing now, and we appear to have the material for a fast team.

Camp Winifred is under the Department of Interior, Grazing Service. Its work is building dams and developing springs for stock watering holes; rodent control; building of drift fences, stock corrals, and roads for development of live stock industry; eradication of poisonous plants; and fire fighting on National and State lands.
