Anglo-American Music Theater I

Topic: Ethnic Caricature

The comic presentation of a character that exaggerates or ridicules appearance, behavior, speech, or other aspects of the character’s racial or ethnic group; a dehumanizing stereotype; reduces a person to a joke; perhaps funny when we don’t take it seriously (“how many viola players does it take to change a lightbulb…”), but sometimes embarrassing and even painful; be aware that sometimes such caricature is intended as sarcasm.
