Anglo-American Music Theater I

Topic: Aesthetics

The artistic quality of a work such as its beauty or craftsmanship and the creative ingenuity of its structure; something high in aesthetic value might be so because it rewards thoughtful  and repeated attention by a cultivated viewer or audience, while something lower in aesthetic value might be in an accessible, vernacular style that serves as an entertaining diversion but might become tedious after repeated exposure. Aesthetics figure in the opposition of the “artistic” to the “commercial;” also, some novels, plays, musicals might do some kind of ethical work (advancing a discussion of right vs. wrong) that is as important as (or more important than) their aesthetic content.
