The Digital Baermann

Harlas, Helen (1786-1818)

Helen [Helena] Harlas (b Danzig, 1786; d München, 21 Oct 1818). Opera singer. Harlas joined the Munich Hoftheater
in 1803, stepping back between 1805–1808 due to her brief marriage to the finance secretary Gottfried Maria Joseph von Geiger (1775–1830), which resulted in three children, the youngest of which is reported to have already been a product of her relationship with Heinrich Baermann.
After her divorce from von Geiger, Harlas resumed her career to great acclaim and also went on to have four further children with Baermann, including Carl Baermann in 1811. Lipowsky's Baierisches Musik-Lexikon of 1811 accords equal praise to her acting as to her singing, though it is unclear whether she also acted in non-singing roles or whether this praise is aimed at her acting in operatic roles.
