The Challenges of Born-Digital Fiction: Editions, Translations, and Emulations: The Multimedia Accompaniment to the Print Edition

Landing Screen of the 1990 Edition of afternoon

This bit-mapped graphic used for the 3rd Edition of afternoon, a story is found in title screens for all but two editions of the work. Joyce remembers creating the art himself using MacPaint and repurposing it from an image of reporters filing out of the Pentagon (Grigar, "Ten Things," 4 May 2016). The publication information references the 1987 Edition as the original publication date and lists this edition as The Eastgate Press Edition. Indeed, Joyce calls it the "1st Eastgate Edition."
