The Challenges of Born-Digital Fiction: Editions, Translations, and Emulations: The Multimedia Accompaniment to the Print Edition

Folio of the 1991 Edition of afternoon

When Eastgate Systems, Inc. published Michael Joyce's afternoon, a story in 1990, it was packaged in a cream colored vinyl folio with purple ink. On the back cover, Stuart Moulthrop, a friend and colleague involved in TINAC with Joyce, John McDaid, and Nancy Kaplan, contributes his recommendation. The following year in 1991, the company released another edition of the novel in the same packaging. Similar packaging for afternoon, a story is also used for the 2001 and 2007 CD-ROM Editions. While an economical approach for the publisher, the re-use of packaging makes identifying the edition one is accessing a challenge.
