Race and the Digital: Racial Formation and 21st Century Technologies

Methodology

Why Instagram?

Of all the social medias available to the general public, I chose Instagram because prior to taking a Chicano/a class I was not aware of how sharing personal pictures with a phone application was contributing to such a gap between users and non-users of technology. I never thought of those who do not have access to a cellular phone or a computer, and how “missing out” on Instagram is potentially hurting them socially. Instagram is also relatively new to the 21st century and is gaining popularity around the nation. I also did not ever consider the different demographics that play a major role in social medias and its specific users. Race, gender, and age are just a few of the demographics that can be seen to analyze the breakdown of a social medias’ users. This leads to the specific statistical data set that I chose to analyze along with my social media, “The Demographics of Social Media Users-2012” by the Pew Research Center released in February 2013, the majority of readers if not all can see why it was chosen. It gives recent demographic information on the users of Instagram. According to the data set, the different categories of demographics is what determines who uses what social medias other than Instagram, such as Facebook, Pinterest, and so on. There is a trend that is being created among the users of social medias. Also, while being in a Chicano/a class I have encountered a few readings that collaborate with the idea of how race plays a role in social medias and the digital divide.
