Race and the Digital: Racial Formation and 21st Century Technologies

The Fight Continues...

Unrestricted by time, space, or distance, new media has allowed for fast, easy, and cheap global action to take place. It's various platforms have offered ordinary, everyday African Americans a space where they have been empowered; where their voices have been heard, their stories have been told, and their lives have mattered.  Through social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr, along with blog sites and their own official website, #BlackLivesMatter has sparked a massive revolution. Centered around principles that call upon community, resilience, and social action, #BlackLivesMatter has cemented itself as a true movement of the African American people. In the past few years, other hashtags have emerged revolving around the greater Black Lives Matter movement. #ICantBreathe, #HandsUpDontShoot, #IfTheyGunnedMeDown have all shown the power of new media as well. What we must understand however is that the fight for justice is not over. It is far from over. With new media's increasing role in social movements however, change will come. For now, the fight continues.
