Tensions are high in the great Election of 1800. The general public is split between Thomas Jefferson or Aaron Burr.  The various voters discuss about whom they like more, but it does not do much. The vote comes down to Hamilton. He votes for Jefferson (PLOT TWIST!?!?!) because "Jefferson has beliefs. Burr has none". Burr is annoyed that Hamilton would do that when he is openly against what Jefferson stands for.

It is a turning point in the government because a mew ruler has officially been selected. The lyrics do a great job at creating tension about the situation and leaving it up to Hamilton. From an acting perspective, everyone wants drama onstage because that is entertaining (the same reason people watch trashy tv) and this song creates the tension of Hamilton having to pick a side. Although from history it is known that Jefferson becomes president, the fact that Hamilton says he only went with Jefferson because he at least has firm beliefs is still such a surprise given the relationship created between Burr and Hamilton. It is an up point for Jefferson, a low point for Burr, and the start of a new era thanks to Hamilton.
