‘A Woman of Great Courage’: Women in the Printing Trades in Early Modern Europe

Sarah Griffin (active 1652-1673)

Sarah Griffin, identified in her imprints as S.G., became head of an established printing house in London upon the death of her husband Edward in 1652. He, in turn, had inherited it from his mother, Anne Griffin, who ran the business between 1634 and 1643. Anne was also notable as a member of the printing syndicate Eliot's Court Press. Sarah worked alone from 1652 to 1671, at which time she began printing jointly with her son, Bennett. She is recorded as a printer in the Stationers' Company records until 1673.
