‘A Woman of Great Courage’: Women in the Printing Trades in Early Modern Europe

Ellen Cotes (active 1652-?)

Ellen Cotes, identified in her imprints as E.C. or E. Cotes, was the widow of Richard Cotes, who had worked in partnership with his brother Thomas until the latter's death in 1642. In that year, Richard was appointed the official printer to the City of London. Upon his death in 1652, she inherited his business. In a London survey of 1668, she is shown as managing three presses, two apprentices and nine pressmen.

For information on this and other books printed by Cotes, see the List of books.
