‘A Woman of Great Courage’: Women in the Printing Trades in Early Modern Europe

Anne Maxwell (active 1665-1675)

Anne Maxwell (active 1665-75) was the widow of London printer David Maxwell (active 1659-65). She produced one hundred books between 1660 and 1684. In a 1668 survey of London printing presses, she is identified as having two presses, and employing three typesetters and three pressmen. Between 1668 and 1690 she supervised and trained twelve apprentices.
