It was carried out, at the behest of Francisco Franco's nationalist government, by its allies, the Nazi German Luftwaffe's Condor Legion and the Fascist Italian Aviazione Legionaria, under the code name Operation Rügen. The town was being used as a communications center behind the frontline. The operation opened the way to Franco's capture of Bilbao and his victory in northern Spain.plain2019-05-06T05:47:53-07:00ALBA; http://www.albavolunteer.org/2013/12/the-nature-and-military-rationale-of-the-bombing-of-gernika/193643.31395, -2.678314PhotoSpanish Civil WarJoseph Brown5eac7ef3705d9f80e567b77e809a27064bd00249
