It was carried out, at the behest of Francisco Franco's nationalist government, by its allies, the Nazi German Luftwaffe's Condor Legion and the Fascist Italian Aviazione Legionaria, under the code name Operation Rügen. The town was being used as a communications center behind the frontline. The operation opened the way to Franco's capture of Bilbao and his victory in northern Spain.plain2019-05-12T21:39:07-07:00ALBA; http://www.albavolunteer.org/2013/12/the-nature-and-military-rationale-of-the-bombing-of-gernika/193643.31395, -2.678314PhotographSpanish Civil WarJordan Carmer7852427f9085767576ef6308f5a8e38bfc47822a
