US Latinx Activism and Protests: From the Farm to the (Legislative) Table

Chicano Moratorium

In this section, we explore themes such as war, discrimination, feminism, machismo, police violence, and leadership. Each page provides context on a different topic and portrays various themes. The first gives background information on the Vietnam War and disproportionately enlisted Mexican youth. The second shines a spotlight on the feminist leadership of Gloria Arellanes before and during the Moratorium, who created the women’s activism group Las Adelitas de Aztlán. Our next page outlines the events of August 29, 1970 in a detailed timeline. Finally, we present the biography and contributions of Ruben Salazar, a respected Chicano journalist who tragically perished in the aftermath of the Moratorium.
