The symbol on this sign represents the dropout rate (50%) at the five schools in East LA with a majority Chicanx population. A primary motivation for the walkouts was a lack of educational opportunities. Rather than college preparatory classes, Chicanx students were overwhelmingly steered towards vocational or domestic programs (Mejías-Rentas).
