Star of the Sea : A Postcolonial/Postmodern Voyage into the Irish Famine

The Thrill of it All, 2014

The Thrill of it All is the story of Irish teenager Robbie Goulding, Vietnamese refugee and orphan Fran Mulvey, and the twins Sarah-Thérèse and Seán Sherlock, and follows the band they form, The Ships in the Night, from the early eighties to 2012. Throughout the band’s successes and failures, the novel is a “story of loyalties, friendship, the call of the muse, and the beguiling shimmer of teenage dreams.” The Thrill of it All was praised by US National Book Award winner Colum McCann as featuring O’Connor “at his playful and narrative best” (“The Thrill of it All”).
