Biology of the Famine

In this section we will explore the scientific aspect of the Famine, providing a relatively in-depth look at some of the relatively neglected characters in the story of Ireland’s great 19th Century tragedy: disease, blight, and the potato itself. This information is organized into two main sections:
This section details the biological processes of prolonged  undernourishment, then provides an inventory of major diseases which would have been prevalent among sufferers of the famine.
 This section provides information about the history of the blight and potato cultivation in Ireland.
