Star of the Sea : A Postcolonial/Postmodern Voyage into the Irish Famine

Canada

Le Mémorial” that is pictured is in Grosse Île, Québec. It was designed by the artist Luicienne Cornet with the help of the architect Emile Gilbert and his associates France Laberge and César Herrera. It was completed in 1998 and inaugurated in the presence of the President of Ireland Mary McAleese after being commissioned by the Department of Canadian Heritage. The plaques are in French, but reference the echoes of the women, children, and men being behind these stones with their singing and also crying out with tears as they embrace the hope of a new life. The significance of the location is clear as it describes how 7553 immigrants of all backgrounds arrived here, while 1545 of them still remain nameless to this day. The names of those who died throughout the process of immigration are engraved on the wall.
