Sounding Childhood

Silent Night

"Silent Night" is not a children's carol per se, but its musical beauty appeals to adults and children alike.  The history of its composition is legendary: Austrian Father Joseph Mohr, preparing for Christmas Eve service in 1818, discovered the organ broken.  Mohr quickly wrote a Christmas text, then asked the organist Franz Gruber to write a simple tune he could play on guitar.  It was made famous throughout Austria by children, the singing Strasser Family's 4 children, who sang it even before their king and queen.  It was published in German in 1838, and finally in English in 1863. (from Robert J. Morgan, Then Sings My Soul, Thomas Nelson, 2011, p. 93).  See a score from an early 20th century hymnal, above.

We sang it in parts to enhance the beauty.
