Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

"Silent Night" is not a children's carol per se, but its musical beauty appeals to adults and children alike. The history of its composition is legendary: Austrian Father Joseph Mohr, preparing for Christmas Eve service in 1818, discovered the organ broken. Mohr quickly wrote a Christmas text, then asked the organist Franz Gruber to write a simple tune he could play on guitar. It was made famous throughout Austria by children, the singing Strasser Family's 4 children, who sang it even before their king and queen. It was published in German in 1838, and finally in English in 1863. (from Robert J. Morgan, Then Sings My Soul, Thomas Nelson, 2011, p. 93).
We sang it in parts to enhance the beauty.
