Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Introduction: Different Variations of Self in Video Games

One very common and unique way of expression of self is through playing video games. For those who do not play video games, it might seem different for someone to be able to express themselves through the likes of video games, yet the virtual world acts as an escape from reality. In turn, people become immersed with the different phases of video games and virtual worlds. There are some key things to weigh into consideration when factoring information about the self. The three main things are age, race, and gender. Throughout the many different video games, platforms, and means of communication, there are ways in which each aspect of the self can be addressed and altered. In terms of age, there are many different platforms and video games that may be deemed appropriate or suitable for others. Along with that, there are ways in which you can express yourself through race and skin color. Also, other people become immersed through simulations that engulf such a feeling of reality that they essentially get lost in these virtual worlds. I will be discussing the different factors and phases that contribute to the development of self and this feeling of immersion in the world of video games.
