Reconstruction of People's Identities through Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence reconstructs people’s identities according to their own perceptions in the virtual space and eventually incorporating these virtual identities into people’s original identities. Baym gave this example in her book, “A (Google) search for Nancy Baym will turn up my academic persona on my university website, a more well-rounded If trite self-presentation on Twitter, and a more pop-culture-oriented self on my blog. All of these are genuine parts of me, but online they are segmented into separate spaces where they can become distinct identities.”106 Baym Google search function is probably the largest and the most powerful artificial intelligent agent created in the real world. As Baym argued, a Google search did not reveal her true personality. However, a fragmented Baym was searched and different aspects of Baym online are collected by the searcher. Artificial intelligence recognizes Baym in different aspects and stores them as different Bayms in its memory, but none of these were the true Baym. These only represents a virtual appearance of Baym.

The same example happens on Facebook. Andrew Mendelson and Zizi Papacharissi analyzed Facebook posts in Look at Us and found out that most people only posted positive moments of their lives and almost none of them posted negative moments. “Research on Self-presentation has moved from examining interpersonal interactions, to displays through mass media.” People are fragmented into different aspects of themselves, tagged with attributes and posted on the cloud either to identify themselves or to recreate themselves as a new figure in the virtual world, which is a very fantastic version of history. It is editing the self into a false ideal in the virtual cybernetic space where negative experiences are masked. Artificial Intelligence proceeds information as they are actually communicating with people who are using them in the real world and stores information as a representation of human identities. And according to the information gathered by Facebook’s Artificial Intelligent agent, Facebook sends out information that people maybe interested in. The interpretations of human identities are inaccurate because people tend to post incomplete images of their identities. But as communication between human minds and artificial intelligence get more and more intensive where people are being observed everywhere by artificial intelligence, these communications enable virtual intelligent agents to perceive human beings more accurately and moreover it incorporates human’s real identity and virtual identity.

There are great passages including examples of how people's identities have been represented in the cloud, in social media. Please read articles in both of these two tags, social media and self, to learn more about this.
