Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

The gameplay of the Grand Theft Auto 5 campaign makes for a complex decision-making video game platform that offers different choices for the player of the game. In doing this, the player is allowed the opportunity to shape the way the game is played. By offering different options and ways to play the game, it gives the player the chance to relay his or her personality throughout the game and tells a little bit more about themselves and who they might be as a person. The self is portrayed a lot through the choices made in gameplay. Personality is reflected by the choices made in the game.
Grand theft auto five’s map is based on the make up of Los Angeles, California, and it highly resembles many different locations throughout the city. This creates a very unique relation between self and simulation. Because the maps are so realistic it creates a very real feeling for the player. This is very similar to the simulations created in the documentary “Full Battle Rattle”. The simulations of a foreign country were put into play and created a very real feeling and the people involved in the simulation became immersed in their role. To a certain extent this holds true in Grand Theft Auto 5. People don’t become immersed with GTA 5 by killing random people on the streets or raiding FBI headquarters (different aspects of campaign gameplay), instead they become immersed in the realness of the map and the “badass” feeling of being able to do whatever they want, whenever they want.
