The International Prester John Project: How A Global Legend Was Created Across Six Centuries

Damião de Góis

Born in Alenquer, Portugual, Damião de Góis (1502-1574) was a humanist philosopher and historian.

Damião's Legatio was an important early modern source on Ethiopian Christianity. It was published in 1532 on the heels of the recent Portuguese embassy to Abyssinia (1520-1526) (led by Diogo Lopes de Sequeira and recorded by Francisco Álvares). This text tells of the Abyssinian Embassy arriving in Portugal in 1513. The account was quickly translated into English by John More
