The International Prester John Project: How A Global Legend Was Created Across Six Centuries

Joao Afonso de Aveiro (Afonso de Paiva)

Afonso de Paiva (c. 1443-c. 1490) was a Portuguese explorer of Ethiopia and the Barbary Coast. In 1487, Afonso was chosen (along with Pêro da Covilhã) by Portugal's King João to serve as ambassadors on a mission to find Prester John in Ethiopia.

Their route, which took them along the Mediterranean (instead of through the heart of Africa), was recorded in their Report to the Court of King João II.
