Richard Hakluyt (1553-1616) was an English geographer and outspoken champion of early British sea expansion, most notably for the purposes of settling North America. Although not much of a traveler himself, he kept contact with the major explorers and cartographers of his day (including Abraham Ortelius and Gerardus Mercator) and was considered the first professor of modern geography at Oxford.
