Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

His 1509 travels to Malacca, Malaysia-- the first undertaken by a European-- paved the way for the later expedition of Afonso de Albuquerque, whose footsteps he later followed in by becoming viceroy of India in 1518, replacing Lopo de Soares.
In 1518, Diogo replaced Lopo de Soares as the man in charge of a mission to find Prester John, deemed the king of Abyssinia, and to create an alliance with this king. The result was the first Portuguese embassy to Ethiopia, which took place over the years 1520-1526. This undertaking is documented in the Letters of Diogo Lopes de Sequeira.
