Japanese Prints @ St. Kate's: Selections from the Archives & Special Collections at St. Catherine University

Utagawa Hiroshige III

Utagawa Hiroshige III (歌川広重 三代)
1842–1894

Alternate Names: Gyokuo (玉桜), Gyokuoro (玉桜楼), Kaisai (魁斎), Ikkaisai (一魁斎), Taiso (大蘇), Sokatei (咀華亭), Tsukioka (月岡), Yonejiro (米次郎).

Utagawa Hiroshige III learned from both masters Utagawa Hiroshige I and Utagawa Hiroshige II. His imagery of Western dress, Western architecture and new steam locomotives juxtaposed with native Japanese scenery landed him among the top five in a 1880 list of ukiyo-e artists. This attention to Western motifs was heavily influenced by his predecessors.
