A Miscellany of Characters, Words and Names of Some Local People

Following the memorial is a short phrase “粵海関外洋船牌” (license of a foreign ship issued by the Canton Customs) in the next page. The next two pages provide several merchant names and geographical terms related to the American (especially Rhode Island) trading activities in Canton:

The next three pages consist of some miscellaneous characters and words which do not have direct relations with the previous parts and are without any annotations: “不明白” (do not understand), “二路二左也路比 (the author’s note: meaning not clear)”,  “八聲” (eight tones), “短詞” (short phrase), “口” (mouth), “收” (receive), “嘗見” (seen before), “饑” (hungry), “君” (you), “頭” (head), “桌子” (table), “女兒” (daughter), “麫” (noodle), “頭” (head), “嚌齒” (to taste), “姐” (elder sister), “至” (come or go), “瓦” (tile), “鱗” (fish-scale), “魚” (fish), “徒徒 (the author’s note: meaning not clear)”, “母母” (mother), “作” (make), “窬” (hole in a wall), “檑” (stone missiles or wooden beams), “瓦”, “知” (know), “人” (human being), “馬” (horse), “手” (hand), “口”, “氣” (air), “子” (child, son), “兒” (child, childhood), “東” (east) and “廣東”. The second last page of the Illustrations is an explanation of the term “閑人免進 hiên {han} yun min cín {chun} – otiosus, vagari” (employees only) and it ends with the names of some people whom Carter knew, together with the Chinese transliteration of “Mess Carter”:
