Imaginary
According to the “Free dictionary by Farlex”
imaginary is an adjective used to describe something that exists only in the
imagination, and therefore the word ‘unreal’ is a synonym of imaginary. We
create imaginary things in our thoughts of many different types and all the
time.
This word relates to the word ‘simulacra’ because they
both represent concepts which are opposite to reality, or at least in a beginning
and with a concrete way of thinking, they do. An interesting use we give to
both of this is to enhance or completely modify/escape our reality. Just like
the “matrix” (which is made out of simulacra) has no big problems, such as
poverty, to deal with. We do exactly the same thing in our world, but since we
can’t manipulate simulacra as well we wish we could we do it by using our
imagination. We believe in what we want to believe, we make our reality, our imaginary
reality.
Simone Weil once said: “We must prefer real hell to an imaginary paradise.” Just like the
main characters in “The Matrix” did by choosing the right pill. So, should we
stop dreaming and start working?
