1922 June vol. 4, no. 4

Format: Notable for the development of dependable scholarly apparatus, this issue includes the first article with consistently numbered footnotes, Christus Crucifer, by active member of the editorial board, C. R. MOREY.

1922 December vol. 5, no. 2

The first engraved image on the cover of the journal, ushers in a long, if intermittent, tradition of the cover referencing an aspect of the interior content (the article documented below).  In this instance, Ghiberti's self portrait is not illustrated for the article although it is mentioned, and the cover is cited in a footnote at the end of the article.

An extraordinary first experiment with high-quality photographic reproductions (heliotypes) for the article, Brunelleschi in Competition with Ghiberti (pdf), by FERN RUSK SHAPELY (wife of Editor-in-Chief John Shapley, and involved in the editing of the journal) with photographs by CLARENCE KENNEDY.  The cost of this experiment?
