H. Lee Scamehorn was a Business Historian, Author, and college professor at the University of Colorado. He wrote two important books documenting the history of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, and is considered by many to be an authority on the subject. His work has been used as a reference by a number of scholars and college students. 

Many of the research documents and oral histories that he discovered or produced were donated to the Steelworks Archives, and can still be found there. 

Dr. Scamehorn Passed away on June 13, 2016. His obituary, published in The Daily Camera on June 15, 2016, reads:

"Lee Scamehorn, age 90 years, was born in Kalamazoo, MI. to E.C. and Mary Scamehorn, February 27, 1926. He died June 13, 2016. He attended Western Michigan University for his under-graduate degree and completed graduate work at the University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana. He was a veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict. After earning his Ph.D. in history he joined the faculty of the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he taught from 1956 through 1995. While he was a faculty member at the University of Colorado and following his retirement he authored many articles and books. Among the books on Colorado business history are: Albert Eugene Reynolds, Colorado's Mining King; Pioneer Steelmaker of the West; Mill and Mine, the Rockefeller Years; High Altitude Energy, which received the award for the best Colorado history of the year; most recently a 2 volume history of the Colorado canning industry, Colorado's Small Town Industrial Revolution. He is survived by his second wife, Rosslyn, whom he married in 1981, and an adopted daughter, Brenda Ortiz of Albuquerque, N.M. Lee and Rosslyn shared interests in education, foreign travel and research and publishing books on aspects of Western American history. His former first wife, Mary Lou Ring, died in 2014. According to his expressed wishes there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made to Community Food Share or to the University of Colorado Foundation to provide support for the History Department, donations can be sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel".
