The Gold Rush: A New Wave of Feminism in Alaska

Bridget Bodick

My project, titled The Gold Rush: A New Wave of Feminism in Alaska, is a product of the Artifact Analysis project for English 476, the History of the English Language. This project explores the role of women in the Gold Rush through a feminist lens. In my project, I argue that the Gold Rush was a time in which women were finding their own voice among a historically patriarchal society. I examine letters written by Julia Musgrave, a woman who moved to Dawson, Yukon Territory with her husband, George Musgrave, in 1898 in search of wealth and prosperity. Through these letters, along with a handful of other supporting sources, I highlight the feminist movement occurring during this time through observing women’s speech.
