Colorado Fuel and Iron: Culture and Industry in Southern Colorado

Blast Page - 9/20/1965

This #blastfromthepast was printed in the September 20, 1965 issue of the CF&I Blast newspaper. Venturing into the world of educational films in the 1960s, Walt Disney Productions produced "Steel and America," a 27 minute documentary for the Steel and Iron Institute. In the film, Donald Duck learns about steel making by obtaining raw materials from the earth, through each stage of the process, to the finished product. It features both live action and animation. The film was shown to community groups, schools, as well as on television multiple times. CF&I received a copy of the film as promotional material. The film went on to win five national and international film awards including one at the Venice International Industrial Film Festival.

"Steel and America" is shown regularly in the Steelworks Museum to young people who visit with their schools or with their families. Stop in today with your favorite kid (or those grownups who are just kids at heart) and ask us to view it.
