Photos of Kathy Mac's "Unnatural Habitats"

The photos of Kathy Mac's Unnatural Habitats found in this chapter are of copies Dene Grigar owns and holds in her library in the Electronic Literature Lab, at Washington State University at Vancouver.

"Unnatural Habitats" Folio, Contents

The folio holding Unnatural Habitats and In Small and Large Pieces contains two floppy disks and an instructional booklet.

"Unnatural Habitats" Folio, Front

The folio's cover of Volume 1, Number 3, Summer 1994 issue of The Eastgate Quarterly Review of Hypertext features Kathryn Cramer's In Small and Large Pieces and Kathy Mac's Unnatural Habitats packaged together. The cover is black, with an illustration of many hands on a chessboard-looking field of alternating black and white squares. A red hand resides in the middle. Unnatural Habitats and In Small and Large Pieces are printed in this same red color, with "In Small & Large Pieces" in the upper fourth of the folio cover and Unnatural Habitats in the lower. The names of the authors precede the titles of their pieces, while a small sticker on the cover of this folio identifies it as the property of electronic literature scholar Katherine Hayles. The price of the issue, in the upper-right hand corner, is listed as $19.95, and a blurb from the Wall Street Journal reads "Eastgate [is] the pre-eminent hyperfiction publisher" at the bottom of the cover.

"Unnatural Habitats" Folio, Back

The back of the folio of Volume 1, Number 3, Summer 1994 issue of The Eastgate Quarterly Review of Hypertext is solid black, with white text describing the two works in the issue. Kathy Mac's Unnatural Habitats is described as "weav[ing] together the poetry of twelve unnatural habitats... and the women and men who live in them." and some of Kathy Mac's publication history and place of residence (Nova Scotia) are given below in italics. At the bottom of the back cover is Eastgate Systems' logo and contact information including the phone numbers and mailing address of the publishing house next to a box holding the work's ISBN number and a bar code to be scanned at the point of purchase.

"Unnatural Habitats" Folio, Open

The open folio of the Fall 1996 issue of The Eastgate Quarterly Review of Hypertext features text advertising subscriptions to the Review ("four incomparable issues just $49.95") on the reverse of the front cover, followed below by the contact information and logo of Eastgate Systems. Opposite this advertisement, the reverse of the back cover advertises the Storyspace software as "The Future of Writing" accompanied by enthusiastic quotes from Robert Coover and George Landow and the price of the product -- $245.00 for an individual package, and $595.00 for a ten-pack for "outfitting your lab or classroom!"

"Unnatural Habitats" Folio, Spine

The narrow spine of the folio lists the title of the Review, the full names of the two authors contributing to it (Kathryn Cramer and Kathy Mac) and the mark "Eastgate Systems Inc."

"Unnatural Habitats" Grey Floppy, Front

Unnatural Habitats is held with In Small and Large Pieces on a gray floppy disk with a white label on the upper half of the floppy. Printed at the top of the label is "The Eastgate Quarterly Review of Hypertext" and the issue information. The titles are printed in the middle of the label along with the authors' names and the words "for Windows." A maroon stripe on which is written "SERIOUS HYPERTEXT from" crosses two-thirds of the way down the label, and below it is a drawing of an arch and Eastgate Systems' address and phone numbers.

"Unnatural Habitats" Grey Floppy, Back

A portion of the label on the front of the floppy disk folds over to the back of the disk, which is the same gray color as the front. Maroon text reads "Copyright 1993-1994 by Eastgate Systems. All Rights Reserved. Unauthorized distribution or sale of this material is expressly prohibited."

Opposite, a page labelled "Getting Started with The Eastgate Quarterly" gives users thorough instruction on how to load the floppy disks containing the works, fonts, and associated applications onto their computers with illustrations of relevant icons placed alongside the text.
