Race and the Digital: Racial Formation and 21st Century Technologies

Methodology

Youtube is a very popular new media source among internet users. A new media source is a platform where content is created and made available on demand through the internet. In fact, it is ranked as the second largest social networking site. On Youtube, the content that is created, shared, and viewed are videos. The data I used (located below) helped me understand and get a general feel of who has access to the internet, what said people use the internet for, and how race plays into the digital divide. Overall, the data highlights how people of color are underrepresented, use the internet for "bad/fun" purposes, and lack accessibility.

Data Sources used.

These data sets are important and support my findings on the digital divide because they focus on key factors such as race, education (parent and the surveyed), and socioeconomic status. These factors are important because they call attention to what determines internet access and who has said access.
