Dedicatory Frontispiece
N.B. The original version of this frontispiece includes a dedication to Lord Charlemont. However, Charlemont’s promise to fund the publication of the Antichità Romane was unfufilled. In response, Piranesi produced four smaller frontispieces which publicly denounced his former patron through the ancient practice of the damnatio memoriae, removing Charlemont’s name from the subsequent prints. Francesco Piranesi later dedicated this and other works to Gustav III, the King of Sweden, as the reworked version above shows.
