The Digital Piranesi

Dedicatory Frontispiece

This dedicatory frontispiece was made by Francesco Piranesi and differs substantially from the original by G.B. Piranesi. The original exists in two states, with the first being dedicated to Lord Charlemont. However, Charlemont’s promise to fund the publication of the Antichità Romane was unfufilled. In response, Piranesi produced four smaller frontispieces which publicly denounced his former patron through the ancient practice of the damnatio memoriae, removing Charlemont’s name from the subsequent prints. Francesco Piranesi later dedicates this and other works to Gustav III, the King of Sweden.
